How to become an air traffic controller in Spain

Today's article is designed for those who want to become air traffic controllers in our country, Spain. Below we explain what the process consists of, the requirements that students are asked and what the training received would be like.

Step 1: Training

Any person who wants to become an air traffic controller must initially go through a basic training process, recognized by the civil aviation authority. If the student passes said course, and also meets the requirements requested (we summarize them below) in addition to passing the corresponding medical examination, the student would receive the student controller license issued by AESA.

But what would this formation be like?

This training is directly related to the position you would occupy as an air traffic controller. There are three work zones: tower, approach and area.

The course is divided into two parts:

  • Basic initial: common for all controllers.
  • Initial qualification: depending on the service you perform, as we have said before.

Step 2: Meet the requirements

Before training, find out if you meet the following requirements that are required once you are inside:

  • Having at least 18 years of age (To obtain the license as an air traffic controller you must have reached the age of 21, although AESA may issue said license if all the training has been completed).
  • Be in possession of a Bachelor's degree or training that allows access to university or equivalent.
  • Demonstrate by a valid certificate which has the level of linguistic competence in Spanish and English languages ​​required.
  • Be in possession of a valid medical certificate and in force, issued by the medical centers or medical examiners authorized by AESA, in accordance with the requirements adopted by Eurocontrol for the European Class 3 medical certificate.
