Did you know that neurons regenerate?

For a long time it was thought and firmly believed that people were born with a finite number of neurons and that these died and did not regenerate. However, it is yet another "lie" that science has been in charge of disproving, explaining what is known as "Adult neurogenesis".

What is adult neurogenesis?

Adult neurogenesis is the generation of neurons produced at other ages and moments of the life cycle other than the embryonic stage. During our adult life, our brain goes manufacturing new neurons that complete the already existing and "limited" so far created by the fusion of the sperm and the ovum of the parents.

Although there are many contradictory opinions towards it, some studies have proven that this Adult neurogenesis can be provoked, precipitated and reinforced by performing a series of practices related to the habits and daily routines that we carry out. But what can some of these daily practices be? Well it depends on diet, exercise and even, the practice of sex. Of course, also reading habits, study and daily learning, training based on interactive games, etc.

According to a team of experts at the Karonlinska Medical Institute in Sweden, up to 1.400 new neurons can be generated. What's more, these new neurons could help with future research to alleviate neurodegenerative diseases. According Paul Irimia, neurologist at the University of Navarra Clinic and member of the Spanish Neurology Society (SEN): «Knowing this reality generates an expectation. The door opens to develop different treatments that promote this generation; Delving into these investigations could, in some way, offer expectations in some diseases ”.

Even so, although they do regenerate, you have to take care of them, especially from stress and emotional and work anxiety, ... Keeping your mind active on a daily basis delays that neuronal aging. And what do you do to take care of your neurons?
