Laboratory technician

The laboratory technician is that person who helps and supports the work of scientists, teachers or researchers, depending on whether their work is applied in a clinical, university or scientific laboratory.

Some of the activities they carry out are:

  • Manage stock of material of the laboratory and they are in charge of replenishing these when necessary.
  • Eliminate waste from laboratory.
  • They prepare the equipment and they maintain them.
  • They take and they analyze samples received.
  • Record and review the results obtained in the experiments.
  • Communicate the results to the scientists, teachers or researchers for whom you work. They can do it orally or in writing by means of a report.
  • They identify the hazards in the laboratory and assess the risks.

Laboratory technicians are easy to identify in their work, as they are usually dressed in a special clothing that protects them: gowns, gloves, goggles and safety shoes.

There are different degrees in the responsibility of a laboratory technician, depending mainly on whether he is a technician who has studied the middle or higher degree cycle. The latter have greater responsibility than the former and consequently their salary is usually higher. In short, we will say that depending on your degree of studies, you will belong to one group or another in your salary agreement. See the following classification:

  • group I (Higher graduates): Bachelor's degree, engineer, architect or equivalent.
  • group II (intermediate degree graduates): diploma, technical architect, technical engineer or equivalent.
  • Group III (specialist technicians): bachelor's degree, superior technician or equivalent.
  • Group IV-A (officers): technician qualification, secondary education graduate or equivalent.
  • Group IV-B (auxiliaries): schooling certificate or equivalent.

This grouping could be applied to almost any job and / or trade.
