What is ESO

ESO

The ESO or what is the same Compulsory Secondary Education is the next step to primary education and the last of what is considered as compulsory. After ESO, the young person can choose to study voluntarily or to work. Having the title of ESO is something necessary and almost mandatory when accessing the labor market and aspiring to have a job.

In the following article we talk more about ESO and of the subjects or subjects that the students who take it must take. 

What is ESO

Once the child finishes primary school, the next step is to access ESO in order to be properly trained and be able to aspire to a job in the future. The ESO includes the age stage that goes from 12 to 16 years, being its duration of about 4 years corresponding to the four courses of the ESO.

Structure of ESO

As we have already mentioned above, ESO consists of four courses that are divided into two cycles. The first cycle is three courses and the second cycle one course. In the first three courses the student will study the following core subjects:

  • Biology and geology
  • Physics and chemistry
  • Geography and History
  • Spanish Language and Literature
  • Maths
  • First Foreign Language

As an option subject, the student must choose between Mathematics Oriented to Academic Teaching or Mathematics Oriented to Applied Teaching.

Regarding the specific subjects the following must be indicated:

  • Physical education.
  • Religion or Ethical Values.
  • Classic culture.
  • Introduction to Entrepreneurial and Business Activity.
  • Music.
  • Technology.
  • Plastic, Visual and Audiovisual Education.
  • Second Foreign Language.

THAT STUDY

In this first cycle the student will study a series of freely configurable materials:

  • Co-official Language and Literature.
  • Specific subjects not studied or subjects to be determined.

After the first cycle is finished, the student must attend the second cycle to obtain the title of the ESO. The subjects to be studied will be divided into those that are focused on Baccalaureate or Vocational Training.

In the event that the student wants to study BaccalaureateYou will have to take the following subjects:

Core subjects such as:

  • Geography and History.
  • Spanish Language and Literature.
  • First Foreign Language and Mathematics Oriented to Academic Teaching.

Choice of two core subjects:

  • Biology and geology.
  • Economy.
  • Physics and chemistry.
  • Latin.

Specific subjects:

  • Physical education
  • Religion or Ethical Values

A minimum of 1 and a maximum of 4 of the following:

  • Performing Arts and Dance.
  • Scientific Culture.
  • Classic culture.
  • Philosophy.
  • Music.
  • Technology of the information and communication.
  • Second Foreign Language.
  • Plastic education.
  • Visual and Audiovisual.

Free configuration subjects:

  • Co-official Language and Literature.
  • Specific subjects not studied or subjects to be determined.

THAT EDUCATION

If, on the other hand, the student is going to choose to study Vocational Training, they will have to take the following subjects:

Core subjects:

  • Geography and History.
  • Spanish Language and Literature.
  • First Foreign Language.
  • Mathematics Oriented to Applied Teaching.

Choice of two core subjects:

  • Sciences Applied to Professional Activity.
  • Introduction to Entrepreneurial and Business Activity and Technology.

Specific subjects:

  • Physical education
  • Religion or Ethical Values

A minimum of 1 and a maximum of 4 of the following:

  • Performing Arts and Dance.
  • Scientific Culture.
  • Classic culture.
  • Philosophy.
  • Music.
  • Technology of the information and communication.
  • Second Foreign Language.
  • Plastic, Visual and Audiovisual Education.

Free configuration subjects:

  • Co-official Language and Literature.
  • Specific subjects not studied or subjects to be determined.

The student who manages to pass both cycles going to get the title of the ESO.

How to obtain the title of the ESO if you do not have it and you are of legal age?

It may happen that a person does not have the ESO certificate but wants to obtain it to complete their studies and training. If that person is of legal age, they can take a test to obtain said title. This test is usually annual and consists of two calls and to be able to access it you need to be of legal age. The test consists of three parts related to the different areas of knowledge: scientific-technological, social and communication.
