In the literary world we can find countless authors, both ancient and current, who deserve to be read and enjoyed, but if there is a Spanish poet for whom time does not pass and whose literary work continues to speak both in schools and institutes, it is without a doubt Federico Garcia Lorca.

Days ago, the name of the poet has been on everyone's lips, but more than for his work, for his life and sad outcome, but that is not what concerns us here and now. In this article we want to vindicate the work of the poet from Granada and name some of his poems and books that do not deserve to be forgotten and that we must bear in mind when studying one of the most relevant poets of the 27 Generation.

Literary work

The central thematic element of the work of the Granada poet is the confrontation between individual freedom and reality, which overrides the individual wishes of each one. Love, death and loneliness are also recurring themes in his work. Quite often, Lorca exposes these themes through poor and marginalized characters who fail to integrate under the yoke of the system and whose painful maladjustment usually leads them to a tragic and / or violent end.

In his poetic career we can distinguish two stages separated by his trip to New York:

  • First stage: Books stand out «Poem of cante jondo» (1921) and his famous "Gypsy romance" (1928). In them, the poet deals with tragic themes such as passion, pain, revenge or death. The poet declared that the true protagonist of the book "Gypsy romance" it was the pain and the constant threat of death to which many of the characters are doomed.
  • Second stage: "Poet in New York", written as a result of his trip in 1929. In this work, Lorca denounces the oppression exercised by a dehumanized civilization through surrealist techniques and free verse. Along with these books, Lorca wrote "Odes, The Divan of the Tamarit" The 1934 y "Garden of Sonnets" in the same year. His work is also noteworthy "Cry for Ignacio Sánchez Mejías".

Lorca's work brings together the cultured with the popular, the classical Spanish tradition together with the surrealist avant-garde, the technicality of pure poetry with the most human and sincere free poetry.
