Advantages and disadvantages of a videoconference interview

It is increasingly common for companies and candidates to come into contact through the videoconferencing system. A possibility that offers advantages and disadvantages in a job interview. In Formación y Estudios we analyze the pros and cons of this possibility.

Advantages of video conferencing

1. It is a formula that shows the human development of the new technologies. that open new doors in the professional field. Thanks to this form of interaction, you can now get in touch with companies regardless of geographic location. From a work point of view, this opens more doors of success for you.

2. The candidate does not have to travel to the company. Something very positive when it comes to a distance of many kilometers. Videoconferencing brings comfort, saving time and, also, saving money. That is to say, it offers an immediacy in the achievement of the objective.

3. Videoconferencing is the closest thing to a face-to-face interview. In other words, it is the best possible alternative. Since, unlike the telephone, it offers visual information.

Disadvantages of video conferencing

However, it is advisable not to idealize the technology in an absolute way because videoconferencing also produces disadvantages that we list below:

1. Technical failures. This is one of the main drawbacks. You can have everything ready and, however, something can go wrong at the last moment: internet connection, image, sound ... That is, you can feel very vulnerable to technical errors that you cannot solve at the moment. This produces technological stress.

2. While when you do a face-to-face interview it is you who assume this responsibility, when you do a videoconference from home, you have to inform those who live with you that you will be busy at a specific time. For example, it is important that they do not interrupt you. That is, you have to take care of organizing these details, as well as choosing a space with good lighting conditions to do the interview.

3. Although videoconference is the closest thing to a face-to-face interview, the truth is that non-verbal communication, that is, body language, is clearer when there is no media coverage of a computer screen. In addition, when the person is not used to conducting job interviews through Skype or Whatsapp it may feel even more uncomfortable.

4. Videoconferencing implies technical knowledge on the part of the candidate and, in turn, must also have a technical support (computer and internet connection). Therefore, this aspect is a disadvantage for those who have a lack of technology knowledge.

Doing a job interview on Skype has its advantages and disadvantages. However, the truth is that there are more pros than cons. Therefore, to take this test, focus on everything that is positive about this career opportunity.

For me it is a great advance to be able to make use of videoconferences, but do not think that they totally replace interviews or face-to-face meetings, there are times when being face to face is necessary, therefore there is time for them and time for business travel
