Do you want to be a dental hygienist?

If you like the world of health and want to study something related to this, it is good that you look at other possibilities beyond the typical ones such as nursing, medicine, etc. For example, dental hygienists or also known as senior technicians in oral hygiene, have a fairly favorable job prospect compared to other studies.

But what is really a dental hygienist? He is a health expert in the prevention of oral diseases and the person in charge of carrying out reversible and preventive dental treatments in his patients.

Functions of the dental hygienist

According to Royal Decree 1594/1994, of July 15, develops Law 10/1986, of March 17, a series of common functions have been established for all dental hygienists. In this way, the following functions are those that you can perform, at least, as regards public and private health:

  1. Collection of data about the state of the oral cavity for its clinical or epidemiological use.
  2. Practice health education individually or collectively, instructing on oral hygiene and dietary control measures necessary for the prevention of oral pathological processes.
  3. Control the prevention measures that patients carry out.
  4. Conduct community oral health exams.
  5. Apply topical fluorides in its various forms.
  6. Place and remove the retractor wires.
  7. Apply pit and fissure sealants.
  8. Carry out the polishing of the fillings and eliminate any excesses thereof.
  9. Place and remove the rubber dam.
  10. Remove dental stones and stains and perform polishing.

How to study it?

Currently, these studies correspond to a degree: Superior degree in Oral Hygiene, with a total of 2000 teaching hours and its requirement is medium high.

First course

  • Reception and logistics at the dental clinic.
  • Study of the oral cavity.
  • Examination of the oral cavity.
  • Oral intervention I
  • Oral health epidemiology.
  • Oral health education.
  • Conservative, periodontics, surgery and implants.
  • English

Second course

  • Prosthetics and orthodontics.
  • Oral intervention II
  • First aid.
  • General pathophysiology.
  • Oral hygiene project.
  • Training and career counseling.
  • Business and Entrepreneurship.

And also some internships that the student will have to carry out for 4 months with a dentist who will advise them during the process and evaluate them at the end.
